The Colorado ZR2 Delivers Off-Road Ability Like You’ve Never Seen Before In a Pickup

Chevy Colorado ZR2 Off-Road Features and Capabilities

Many pickup truck owners want or need the ability to go off-road, and though just about every model in the segment offers the ground clearance and 4WD systems necessary for this, fewer actually come equipped with features specifically engineered for such tasks. That’s why the new Colorado ZR2 is a unique addition to the midsize pickup segment, and in many ways, stands out in a class all its own thanks to off-road features and capabilities that make it a true off-road pickup.

To start with, the ZR2 has a much wider track compared to the standard Colorado pickup, with the addition of a lifted suspension as well. This helps the Colorado ZR2 stay firmly planted while also clearing obstacles in its path. Modified front and rear bumpers were also developed to help with this.

Benefits of Multimatic DSSV Dampers

When it comes to an off-road truck, dampers are important, so Chevy paid a lot of attention to their engineering. They also teamed up with Multimatic, Inc. from Canada, a company specializing in Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve, or DSSV.

The DSSV dampers were initially designed for motorsports, but appeared for the first time in a mass production vehicle when they were added to the 2014 Camaro Z/28. Now, Multimatic DSSV damper technology has been added to the Colorado ZR2. The spool valves are position-sensitive and can be optimized for both everyday driving and extreme off-road use thanks to a third piston-mounted spool and a separate rebound valve for the front dampers.

What Does the Colorado ZR2 Off-Road Mode Do?

One of the most exciting things about the ZR2 is its Off-Road Mode. It can be activated by simply pressing a button and tailors the anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control calibrations to suit a variety of driving conditions. Moreover, Off-Road Mode adjusts throttle progression and shift calibrations so that the driver can have greater responsiveness from their vehicle.

Like the standard Colorado model, the ZR2 has plenty of power from either a 308-horsepower V6 or a Duramax diesel engine producing 369 lb.-ft. of torque, but its unique off-road features and capabilities make it a pickup unlike any other.
